Each year, about one in four adults over 65 has a fall. Many falls lead to broken bones, a hospital stay, or a fear of falling that makes people less active. The good news: most falls can be prevented.
At home
- Remove loose rugs and clutter from walkways.
- Add night lights between the bedroom and the bathroom.
- Install grab bars in the shower and next to the toilet.
- Keep things you use every day within easy reach, so you don't need a step stool.
- Wear shoes with non-slip soles, even indoors.
Your health
- Review your medications. Some medicines, or combinations of them, cause dizziness or sleepiness. Bring all your bottles to your next visit.
- Check your eyes. See an eye doctor once a year and update your glasses.
- Stay strong. Regular walking and balance exercises lower the risk of falling. Physical therapy can help you build strength and balance safely.
- Tell us about dizziness or a recent fall, even if you were not hurt. It can be a sign of a problem we can treat.
Winter in the Pacific Northwest
Wet leaves, rain, and the occasional icy morning make sidewalks and driveways slippery. Take your time, use handrails, and keep a bag of ice melt by the door. Short winter days mean more walking in the dark, so carry a small flashlight or use the light on your phone.
If you do fall
- Stay still for a moment and check whether anything hurts before you try to get up.
- If you can, roll onto your side, get onto your hands and knees, and use a sturdy chair to help you stand.
- If you can't get up, call for help. A medical alert button or a phone you keep with you, even at home, can make a big difference.
- Tell us about every fall, even a small one.
